Replacement of the 31st Street Bridge Over the C&O Canal
Project Information
The 31st Street Bridge is located in Georgetown, and spans the C&O Canal. The bridge is supported on stone masonry abutment walls and an 1867 cast iron multi-column pier. DDOT is replacing the structurally deficient, weight-limited bridge. In the process, the existing historic pier will be removed, restored, and reset.
The project will involve:
-
Installation of a temporary pedestrian bridge prior to the start of construction in order to maintain pedestrian access across the C&O Canal at all times
-
Installation of temporary structures to laterally support the existing canal walls
-
Installation of temporary utility supports, protection of existing utilities, and coordination with all utility companies for relocation prior to bridge replacement
-
Removal, restoration and re-installation of the historic pier
-
Construction of a new bridge and railing, with ADA-compliant sidewalks and ramps
In order to perform the necessary work, vehicular traffic on 31st Street will be closed to through traffic at the Canal. Vehicular traffic will be detoured around the construction work zone. All changes to traffic patterns will be provided in advance throughout the course of the project.
